2014 Taiwan LPGA Tour KENDA Tires TLPGA Open Final Round Recap
Date:2014-05-30

Babe Liu (劉依貞) of Taiwan steam-rolled through the final round of the 2014 KENDA Tires TLPGA Open to capture her second TLPGA and fourth international win on professional tours. Her 6-shot victory was the largest margin of victory in TLPGA events this season.

Liu carded a lowest-round 70 to finish this week at 212 and took home a winner check worth NT$1 million. She has accomplished back-to-back triumphs after claiming last week’s Bank of Qingdao Golden Mountain Challenge in Shandong, China.

“I just got here from China the other day so I didn’t really want to put any pressure on myself. I was just trying to be relaxed and see how I fare with this amount of golf,” said Liu.

“I feel proud of myself,” said the 21-year-old. “I was really happy with how far I’ve come in the first half of this season. I came in this year setting a goal for myself to take three wins at least. And now I’ve done it.” The other win she added on her resume within the season came at the Zhuhai Classic also on the China LPGA Tour in March.

Liu started off on the final Friday with a one-shot advantage over compatriot Chien Pei-Yun (錢珮芸). She was in similar situation to Chien just last year around when she trailed one stroke to Malaysia’s Ainil Johan Abu Bakar heading into the final round, but the nerves and the pressure of taking her maiden victory simply drained her and left her in tears after she congratulated and hugged her main rival on the 18th green. This time she knew exactly what she needed to win.

Sun returned to the Taipei Golf Club with the “blessing” Yang Chi-Jen, Kenda Rubber’s vice president, had prayed for visiting local temples. Liu capitalized on the good weather and eased through on the front nine with two birdies and no bogey, leaving a nice cushion for mistakes. Despite making a double-bogey on the par-4 12th hole, she bounced back immediately with another two birdies to close out the round.

“Now I hope I can keep up this confidence level to help me win a ticket to the Japan LPGA Tour the next season.” To be given the entry to the 2014 JLPGA Tour, Liu has to come through four qualifying events starting in August.

Chien tried hard to keep up the pace of a relaxed Liu but her hope was pretty much killed as she double-bogeyed the No.10 hole. She carded 3-over to finish at 218 to avoid sharing her second place with a group of three sitting at 219 that includes Korean Seung-Hee Yu, who fired a equal-best 70 today, first-round leader Lin Tzu-Chi (林子麒), and Yeh Hsin-Ning (葉欣寧).

The KENDA Tires TLPGA Open is one of the 20 events on the 2014 Taiwan LPGA Tour calendar. “I would like to give my greatest thanks to the generous and continual support of all of our sponsors. TLPGA Tour now ranks 5th largest in total purse among professional women golf tours world-wide. And we’re proud to see our Taiwanese players now have earned their place into the inaugural LPGA “International Crown” team competition of the world’s top 8 nations in July,” said TLPGA chairwoman Liu Yi-Chen.

The next goal of the TLPGA Tour, as Liu said, is to gain the approval into Women’s World Golf Rankings (WWGR) System. The evaluation of the application will be made in July during the WWGR annual meeting.
