2016 Taiwan LPGA Tour Chungyuet Group Ladies Open Second-Round Recap
Date:2016-07-15

Chen Yu-Ju (陳宇茹) of Taiwan used a 3-under 69 on Thursday to extend her lead heading into the final round of the Chungyuet Group Ladies Open. She is now sitting at 7-under 137 and two shots clear of Thailand’s Chorphaka Jaengkit, who handed in an impressive seven birdies, bogey-free score card to go 5-under at 139.

Malaysia’s Michelle Koh shot 69, climbing up to the third place at 3-under 141. Taiwanese Chen Meng-Chu (陳孟竺), Huang Ching (黃靖), and TLPGA Tour titlist Titiya Plucksataporn of Thailand finished 36 holes in a tie for fourth, five stroke off the pace.

Hong Kong amateur star Tiffany Chan, who captured the 2016 Hong Kong Ladies Open in May, carded a 2-under 70. She is currently the lowest amateur player at 145 and T14.

Chen Yu-Ju, Jaengkit and Koh will be off to their final round battle at 8:30 a.m. in the leaders’ group. The event has had the “preferred lies” rule in place for all three days.

First-round leader, 18 year-old Chen continued her efficient production of birdies, recording seven birdies in Thursday’s second-round against two bogeys and one double-bogey.

Fourteen fairways hits and also fourteen greens in regulation were the foundation of another solid round of Chen’s. Despite a brief loss of concentration when she three-putted on the par-3 10th to make a double-bogey, followed by a bogey on the par-4 11th hole where she needed three shots to find the green, she took advantage of both remaining par-5s and scored four birdies on her way back to cement her lead. She needed 28 putts.

Holding a two-shot cushion, Chen is feeling bright about her chance of winning on Friday. “I’m feeling comfortable where my game is. I am really excited for the final day,” said Chen. “I was leading ahead of the final 18 holes last year in Hong Kong, but wasn’t quite letting my strength come forward with my short game and just finished short at second. This time I’ll need to capitalize on the attackable from inside of 100 yards where I’m best.” Chen needed just 28 putts in her second round.

23-year-old pro rookie Jaengkit tied her career low round with the 7-under 65. She used only 23 putts and made seven birdies, three in a row on the last three holes, highlighted by a chip-in on the 17th from 10 yards.

Starting competitive golf at twelve, Jaengkit turned pro in 2015 having played college golf in the U.S.. The young Thai with glasses launched her career on the Ladies Asian Golf Tour (LAGT) and she is playing her third event in Taiwan. “I’m pretty used to it (wearing glasses on the course). I’ll consider if laser eye surgery can help my game but definitely not doing it now.”

When asked how she was approaching the final Friday, Jaengkit said, “the key to tomorrow will be the shots around the greens and putting.”

Malaysia’s Koh had a slow start, parring all her front-nine holes and only picking up birdies on the 11th, 15th and 17th with successful putts from inside of 10 feet. “I missed a lot of chances early actually,” said Koh who needed 18 putts through nine holes. “I tried to be more patient after the turn. It was a great one when it clattered into the pin and finished 1 foot from the hole on the 15th.” The back-nine putts stat improved vastly to just 13.

“Staying on the fairways and making as many greens as I can, that’s my goal for tomorrow,” said Koh. “I’ll need to create as many chances as possible for myself and perhaps with a little bit of luck, I can sneak to the win.”

After today’s round, 56 players made the cut at 8-over 152.

The tournament marks the first partnership and title-sponsorship by the Chungyuet Group on the TLPGA Tour. The Chungyuet Group Ladies Open is an event officially recognized in the WWGR (Women’s World Golf Rankings) system. The event is free of charge and open to all fans.
