Thailand’s Cholcheva Wongras carded her second 67 in a row to be the lone woman sitting in the top-10 on the TrustGolf Asian Mixed leaderboard. This is the second leg of the three TrustGolf Asian Mixed Series Thailand events, organized by the TrustGolf Tour and jointly sanctioned by the Taiwan LPGA Tour and the Taiwan PGA Tour.
Runner-up and best-finishing female player in the first leg a fortnight ago, Nook Sukapan produced consecutive 68s to be in a tie for fourteenth with overnight co-leader Sherman Santiwatatthanaphong.
Taiwan’s Wang Li-Ning (王莉甯) dropped from co-lead position into a tie for eighteen after a second-round even-par 71.
TPGA player Wang Wei-Hsuan turned in a 9-under 62 for the clubhouse lead on 13-under 129. Local golfer Dechawat Phetprayoon rewrote the course record at the Lake View Resort & Golf Club; he shot a 10-under 61 to surge into equal second place with Tawit Polthai.
40 TLPGA Tour elites, 40 TPGA Tour men, and 52 local golfers who have performed well at the TrustGolf qualifying events returned at the Lake View Resort & Golf Club in Cha-am, Thailand this week for the second leg of the TrustGolf Asian Mixed Series Thailand. All 132 players will be playing for the same prize fund of TBH$5 million, in a 54-hole, stroke-play format.
After her low-round 66 with five birdies on Day 1, Wang Li-Ning only managed to make a 71 today in the second round, which sprinkled with three birdies but was nullified by three bogeys.
“I missed a few more fairways than I would hope, which made it difficult for me to create better opportunities on the green. I needed 32 putts. That was a frustrating number,” said Wang. “Especially in a day that birdies were basically flying all day. I felt I did not utilize the conditions too well. The men were actually really, really good today. Making twelve birdies in one round is a crazy feat.”
Chang Tzu-Yi’s (張子怡) second-round 66 helped her rise into equal 23rd. Hung Jo-Hua (洪若華), Phoebe Yao (姚宣榆), Chen Hsuan (陳萱), Chen Ling-Jie (陳伶潔), and Yu Han-Hsuan (俞涵軒) were in a crowded eleven-way tie for 31st.
Hung and Yao both improved from a first-round 1-over 72 to 3-under 139 after 36 holes. “Seeing the men attack so well, I decided to bring a more aggressive game into today. I felt I played really strong with my irons, setting up some nice short putts to score, and my putter was working well and taking its opportunities,” said Yao, who made five birdies and one bogey for a second-round 67.
Chen Hsuan and Chen Ling-Jie also displayed strong short game to post matching 68s. “I think I only missed three greens today, so I had pretty much chances on every hole, but my putter was not quite there,” said Chen Hsuan, who needed 30 attempts on the green.
Yu Han-Hsuan fell twenty places from equal 11th down into 31st, blaming low birdie conversion rate. “I know I left a couple of birdies out there with some putts I missed on the front nine, especially. Hopefully I could improve on the part of the course tomorrow,” said Yu.
Six players were forced to finish their second rounds on Saturday after a rain delay today. A cut will be made to the top-60 and ties after 36 holes. Tomorrow’s winner out of the 132 players will take home a TBH$750,000 first prize. |
