2016 Taiwan LPGA Tour Chico’s Patty Berg Memorial [Symetra Tour] Tournament Preview
Date:2016-04-13

The TLPGA Tour and the Symetra Tour make their way to Cypress Lake Country Club in Florida for the Chico’s Patty Berg Memorial, where 156 golfers including fifteen Taiwanese, three Symetra Tour professionals and twelve wild cards entries, will be vying to share a prize pool of US$200,000 with the winner taking US$30,000.

This is the second of the two co-sanctioned events on 2016 schedule by the two Tours. The Symetra Tour is the second tier developmental tour to the LPGA Tour, dubbed the “Road to the LPGA”.

The Chico’s Patty Berg Memorial will be played through four rounds from Thursday, April 14th and 30 players will join the competition on the Legends Tour event on Saturday and Sunday for a purse of US$150,000 and a winner check worth US$19,500.

Play will begin at 7:30 in the morning and the second wave tees off at 12:20 in the afternoon. The Symetra Tour field will be cut the low 50 and ties following Friday’s second round.

The fifteen Taiwan representatives include three Symetra Tour members Cheng Ssu-Chia (程思嘉), Chien Pei-Yun (錢珮芸), and Doris Chen (陳彥寧). The twelve special entries are Chang Ya-Chun (張雅淳), who finished T2 at Florida’s Natural Charity Classic the past week, 2015 TLPGA Money Winner Kuo Ai-Chen (郭艾榛), TLPGA no.1 Lin Tzu-Chi (林子麒), no.4 Chen Meng-Chu (陳孟竺), no.7 Yeh Hsin-Ning (葉欣寧), no.10 Chen I-Wen (陳依妏), no.11 Liang Yi-Lin (梁宜羚), no.14 Chang Hsuan-Ping (張瑄屏), no.20 Huang Hsien-Wen (黃賢雯), no.21 Pan Yen-Ling (潘彥伶), no.25 Chen Szu-Han (陳思涵) and young prospect Chang Tzu-Yi (張子怡).

15-year-old Chang had the chance to become the youngest Symetra Tour winner after taking a one-stroke lead into Sunday at the Florida’s Natural Charity Classic, but an uninspiring final-round even-par 72 left her just one shot short of making history. Canada’s Samantha Richdale was crowned the champion and moved to the top of the Volvik Race for the Card money list. Also making a jump into the top 10 is Chien, who finished last week solo eighth and now at number 9 on the money list. Final top 10 on the money list can win themselves LPGA Tour membership for 2017.

The 156-player list sees 20 LPGA members and 10 of the top 11 on the Volvik Race for the Card money list with only Richdale choosing to play at the LPGA LOTTE Championship in Hawaii instead. Current number 11 Augusta James is the defending champion. James finished in a tie for twelfth at the Florida’s Natural Charity Classic.

The Chico’s Patty Berg Memorial, in memory of former LPGA superstar and founding member Patty Berg, has doubled the purse since its inaugural event in 2014 when the prize money was US$100,000 and the winner had US$15,000. In 2015, the purse increased to US$150,000 and this year, the total prize purse hit US$200,000 and the winner will walk away with US$30,000.

The Chico’s Patty Berg Memorial is concurrently the second tournament on the 2016 Legends Tour. There are a combined 327 LPGA Tour wins by the thirty women in the field and three players each contributes more than 40- Nancy Lopez (48), JoAnne Carner (43) and Sandra Haynie (42). Seven of them have been inducted to the World Golf Hall of Fame.

Berg was an active figure on the LPGA Tour during 1940s, 1950s, and 1960s. She has won 15 majors, which remains an all-time record, and 60 career titles. Berg has been a member of the Hall of Fame since 1951.
