Taiwan Mobile sponsored golfer Hsu Wei-Ling (徐薇淩) took her second victory of the season at the Taiwan Mobile Ladies Open, after she just earned her maiden title this May at the LPGA Tour’s Pure Silk Championship. It’s also Hsu’s first TLPGA Tour title in four years. She last won in 2017 at the CTBC Ladies Open.

Starting with only a one-shot deficit in the second to last group, Hsu overtook the lead halfway through the final round making two birdies and one bogey, thanks to the turbulence swirling in the leading pack on the front-nine. Her playing partner, 17-year-old amateur Huang Ting-Hsuan (黃亭瑄), after nine straight pars, joined the lead with a birdie on the 10th.

After exchanging birdies through no.11 to 15 on the Tong Hwa layout, Hsu broke the ice with a chip-in birdie on the par-3 16th, where Huang arrived the green in the first attempt but, dramatically, needed three putts to close the hole. This gave Hsu a two-shot cushion with just three holes left.

On the final hole, Hsu’s second shot from 127 yards tilted right, caught by a greenside bunker for the first time in three days, which resulted in a bogey. However, Huang’s birdie putt, the final chance to force a play-off, ran short, setting the final total on 214. Hsu wrapped up the day with a 70, and won the NT$900,000 top prize on 3-under par 213.

“Finally! I felt I always played well at the Taiwan Mobile’s event, but this time finally, I am the best player for the week,” said Hsu. “I wasn’t really sure about my game because I was just back and free from the quarantine till the 8th earlier this month. I haven’t got much time to really put myself in the most ideal form. I’m happy that I could still play well enough to take it.”

The 27-year-old was grouped with two 17-year-olds in Huang and current TLPGA Tour no.1 Wu Chia-Yen (吳佳晏). “I remember we’ve played once with Ting-Hsuan a couple of years ago. She has improved so much since then. I was impressed with her iron game today,” Hsu said. “The pin was tucked in an awkward position on the 18th. Her (Huang’s) second shot was the farthest among all three of us but she ended up getting closest to the hole.” This is the fourth time in this season Huang earned the low-amateur award.

A three-time TLPGA Tour winner in 2021, Wu closed the final round with a 73, finishing in a tie for third with Lee Min (李旻) and overnight co-leader Lee Hsin (李欣) on even-par 216.

Lee Min recorded her second eagle this week on Friday. She used a 54-degree wedge and holed out from the roughs on the 8th hole today, which greatly boosted her confidence. Lee picked up thee more birdies on the back-nine to sneak into the top-3. “The weather was good. The wind was lighter, and the rain stopped. I tried to take better control of the distance and be more brave on my putting. It’s the final round. You’ve got to give it all before it’s too late.”

Hsu plans to stay and enter the Hitachi Ladies Classic in January, the first TLPGA Tour event in 2022, before she begins her LPGA Tour season in Singapore in March at the HSBC Women’s World Championship. There will be a record six TLPGA members starting their campaign on the LPGA Tour. “That is a great news. It’s always not easy to be into a new place, a new culture, especially difficult in the rookie season. With more players coming from Taiwan, I believe it helps us mentally that we’re more supported and more like a team right now rather than fighting alone.”

Alongside Lee Hsin in the leaders’group, Chen Chih-Min (陳之敏) closed the week in a tie for sixth with Erica Huang (黃郁評) and Babe Liu (劉嬿) on 217; Hanna Chen (陳子涵) dropped into equal ninth with Chen Meng-Chu (陳孟竺) on 218.

The NT$5-million Taiwan Mobile Ladies Open is the final pit stop on the 2021 TLPGA Tour.
