2020 Taiwan LPGA Tour | GRIN Cup Charity Open 20– 22 Aug Final-Round Recap
Date:2020-08-22

Amateur player An Ho-Yu (安禾佑) wrapped up the week at the Taiwan Golf Club with a wire-to-wire victory. The newly crowned GRIN Cup Charity Open champion won by six shots on 5-under 211 after a final-round 72.

An was also one of the last two players standing in the extended final-round last week at the CTBC Ladies Open before the rain came and halted play. The amateur agreed to settle for runner-up due to her higher regular round.

Although An seemed to have held onto her 6-shot lead she had before Saturday started, it wasn’t at all a smooth sailing as Phoebe Yao (姚宣榆) mounted an incredible chase that saw the JLPGA Tour champion birdie five of the first seven holes and made it just two shots off of lead when An dropped three shots in two holes after the turn.

However, An showed some quality mentality and bounced right back with a birdie and an eagle in the following two holes on the 12th and 13th, moving to 6-under which proved too hard to match. She had a final blip as she made a bogey on the 18th but her place was untouchable.

“That was a big moment when the ball went into the bunker on the 10th and I ended up making a double-bogey, and then I dropped another shot on the 11th, but I was proud of myself to fight back strongly on the next couple of holes,” said An. “Phoebe was playing heart-out golf today, and giving me a lot of pressure. Everyone was telling me ‘Phoebe is getting close!′ I was very happy to take it one shot at a time and finally secure the win.”

Yao, as the top-finishing pro, earned the winning cash prize of NT$486,000. “It′s been an amazing day. I′d like to give myself a pat on the back for the job well done,” said Yao. “I could have played better on the back nine where I lost my focus and gave back three shots, but it′s a really difficult course, and I′m just happy to finish in red numbers. I put up a big fight and I had no regrets.”

A senior event took place alongside today′s final round of the main event. 14 former Tour stars battled it out for one-round for a NT$50,000 prize check, and Huang Bie Shyun (黃璧洵) emerged victorious in this meaningful gathering. “There was nothing fiery. It was almost like a reunion party. We had a lot of fun. Thanks to GRIN and the organizers for putting up such a special event. I was just a bit luckier today,” said the veteran. Japan LPGA Tour hall-of-famer Tu A-Yu, TLPGA chairwoman Liu Yi-Chen also teed up today.

A NT$1.7 million donation was raised before and throughout the event. The charitable act was conducted by title-sponsor GRIN, a leading membrane material manufacturer in Taiwan. Three local charities were selected to be beneficiaries of the fund-raising.
